1A maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.
I will sing about the LORD's faithful love forever.
With my mouth I will tell of your faithfulness
to every generation to come. 2For I have said, "Your faithful love is built up forever.
You make your faithfulness firm in the heavens." 3You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one.
I have made a promise to David my servant. 4'I will make your family line last forever.
I will build up your throne for all generations.'"
Selah 5LORD, the heavens praise your wonders.
They praise your faithfulness too,
in the gathering of the holy ones. 6For who in the skies can compare with the LORD?
Who among the heavenly beings is like the LORD? 7In the council of the holy ones, God is greatly feared.
He is more awesome than all who are around him. 8LORD God of Hosts, who is like you?
Mighty LORD, your faithfulness is all around you.a 9You rule the wild sea.
When its waves rise up, you calm them. 10You crushed Rahab like a dead body.
You scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.b 11The heavens belong to you, and the earth does too.
You made the world and everything in it. 12You created the north and the south.
Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon shout for joy at your name. 13Your arm is mighty. Your hand is strong.
Your right hand is lifted high. 14Your throne is built on what is right and fair.
Faithful love and faithfulness go ahead of you. 15Blessed are the people who know the joyful shout.
LORD, they walk in the light of your presence. 16They find joy in your name all day long.
They celebrate because you are righteous. 17For you are the glory of their strength.
By your kindness our strength is lifted high.c 18Our shield surely belongs to the LORD.
Our king belongs to the Holy One of Israel. 19Long ago you spoke in a vision.
You said to your faithful people,
"I have given help to a warrior.
I have lifted up one chosen from the people. 20I have found David my servant.
I have anointed him with my holy oil. 21My hand will hold him up.
My arm will surely make him strong. 22No enemy will force him to pay them.
No evil man will crush him. 23I will crush his enemies in front of him.
I will strike down those who hate him. 24My faithfulness and faithful love will be with him.
Through my name his strength will be lifted high.d 25I will put his hand over the sea.
I will put his right hand over the rivers. 26He will call out to me, 'You are my Father.
You are my God, the Rock who saves me.' 27I will make him my firstborn son.
He will be the highest of the kings of the earth. 28I will keep my faithful love for him forever.
My covenant with him will stand firm. 29I will make his family line last forever.
His throne will last as long as the heavens. 30If his sons turn away from my law
and do not live by my rules, 31if they break my laws
and do not keep my commands, 32then I will punish their sin with the rod.
I will punish their wrongs with beatings. 33But I will not take my faithful love away from him.
I will never break faith with him. 34I will not break my covenant.
I will not change what my lips have said. 35Once and for all I have sworn by my holiness.
I will not lie to David. 36His family line will last forever.
His throne will last before me like the sun. 37It will be like the moon, set in place forever,
a faithful witness in the sky."
Selah 38But now you have pushed him away and rejected him.
You are very angry with your anointed one. 39You have turned your back on the covenant with your servant.
You have thrown his crown in the dirt and made it dirty. 40You have broken down all his walls.
You have turned his forts into piles of stones. 41Everyone who passes by robs him.
His neighbors make fun of him. 42You have made his enemies strong.
You have made all his enemies glad. 43You have made the edge of his sword dull.
You have not helped him stand in battle. 44You have ended his glory.
You have thrown his throne to the ground. 45You have cut short the days of his youth.
You have covered him with shame.
Selah 46How long, LORD?
Will you hide yourself forever?
Will your anger keep burning like fire? 47Remember how short my life is!
You have made all people for such emptiness! 48What man can live and never die?
Can he save himself from the power of the grave?
Selahe 49Lord, where is your faithful love from long ago?
You faithfully promised it to David. 50Lord, remember how your servants are mocked.
I carry in my heart the insults of so many people. 51LORD, your enemies have mocked.
They have made fun of every step of your anointed one! 52Praise the LORD forever!
Amen and amen.
