1A song. A psalm of the sons of Korah. For the choir director. To the tune of "Mahalath Leannoth." A maskil of Heman the Ezrahite.
LORD, you are the God who saves me.
Day and night I cry out to you.a
2Let my prayer come to you.
Bend down and listen to my cry.
3For my soul is full of troubles.
My life is getting close to the grave.b
4People count me with those going down to the Pit.
I am like a man with no strength left.
5I am forsaken among the dead.
I am like those killed in battle who lie in the grave.
You don't remember them anymore.
They are cut off from your care.
6You have put me in the lowest Pit,
in the darkest of the deep places.
7Your anger lies heavy on me.
All your waves have rolled over me.
Selah
8You have taken my friends away from me.
You have made them sick at the sight of me.
I am shut in, and I can't get out.
9My eyes are weak from crying.
LORD, I call to you every day.
I hold out my hands to you.
10Do you do wonders for the dead?
Do the spirits of the dead rise up and praise you?
Selah
11Can anyone tell of your faithful love in the grave?
Can anyone tell of your faithfulness in Abaddon?c
12Will your wonders be known in the darkness?
Will your righteousness be known in the land where all is forgotten?
13But LORD, I cry to you for help.
In the morning my prayer comes to you.
14LORD, why do you turn me away?
Why do you hide your face from me?
15Since I was young, I have suffered and been close to death.
I have carried your terrors.
I have lost all hope.
16Your anger has swept over me.
Your terrors have destroyed me.
17All day long they rise around me like a flood.
They close in on me from every side.
18You have taken away my loved one and my friend.
Darkness is my closest friend now.
