1For the choir leader. To the tune of "Lilies." Of David.
Save me, God!
The waters have come up to my neck.
2I have sunk down deep in the mud.
There is nothing to stand on.
I have floated out into deep waters.
The flood covers me.
3I am tired from crying out.
My throat is dry.
My eyes grow weak as I look for my God.
4Many people hate me for no reason.
There are more of them than hairs on my head.
Many want to destroy me.
They are my enemies for no reason.
I did not steal, but I must pay it back.
5God, you know how foolish I have been.
My guilt is not hidden from you.
6Lord GOD of Hosts,
do not let those who hope in you be shamed because of me.
God of Israel,
do not let those who look for you be disgraced because of me.
7For I have put up with insults because of you.
Shame has covered my face.
8I have become a stranger to my brothers.
I am like a foreigner to my mother's sons.
9because my zeal for your house has eaten me up.
The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.
10I cried and went without food.
But it only brought me insults.
11I wore sackcloth for clothes.
They made fun of me.
12Those who sit at the city gate make fun of me.
Drunks make up songs about me.
13But I pray to you, LORD,
at a time when you will be kind.
God, your faithful love is so great.
Answer me, for you surely save.
14Rescue me from the mud.
Do not let me sink.
Save me from my enemies
and out of the deep waters.
15Do not let the floods cover me.
Do not let the deep water swallow me up.
Do not let the Pit close its mouth over me.
16Answer me, LORD, for your faithful love is good.
Turn to me, because your mercy is great.
17Do not hide your face from me, your servant,
for I am in trouble.
Answer me quickly!
18Come close to me and redeem me.
Buy me back because of my enemies.
19You know how I am insulted.
You know my shame and disgrace.
You see all my enemies.
20Insults have broken my heart.
I have lost all hope.
I looked for someone to feel sorry for me, but there was no one.
I looked for someone to comfort me, but I found no one.
21They put bitter poison in my food.
When I was thirsty, they gave me sour wine to drink.a
22May their table become a trap for them.
May it be their punishment and a snare.
23May their eyes grow dark so they cannot see.
May their backs be bent forever.
24Pour out your anger on them.
Let your burning anger catch them.
25May their homes be empty.
Let no one live in their tents.
26For they chase after the one you struck.
They talk about the pain of those you hurt.
27Add sin on top of their sin.
Do not let them share in your righteousness.
28May their names be wiped out of the Book of Life.
Do not let them be written down with those who are right with God.
29But I am in pain and trouble.
God, let your saving power keep me safe.
30I will praise God's name with a song.
I will honor him by giving thanks.
31This will please the LORD more than an ox.
It will please him more than a bull with horns and hooves.
32The humble will see it and be glad.
You who look for God, let your hearts come alive again!
33For the LORD listens to the needy.
He does not look down on his people who are captives.
34Let heaven and earth praise him.
Let the seas and everything that moves in them praise him.
35For God will save Zion.
He will build the cities of Judah again,
so that they may live there and own it.
36The children of his servants will receive it.
Those who love his name will live there.
