1For the music leader. A psalm of David.
LORD, you have searched me,
and you know me.
2You know when I sit down and when I get up.
You understand my thoughts from far away.
3You watch where I go and where I lie down.
You know all my ways.
4Even before a word is on my tongue,
you know all about it, LORD.
5You close me in, behind me and in front of me.
You have put your hand on me.
6Knowing this is too wonderful for me.
It is too high for me to reach.
7Where can I go to get away from your Spirit?
Where can I run from your presence?
8If I go up to the heavens, you are there.
If I make my bed in the grave, you are there.a
9If I fly on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle by the farthest sea,
10even there your hand will guide me.
Your right hand will hold on to me tight.
11If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me,
and the light around me will turn into night,"
12even the darkness is not dark to you.
The night shines like the day,
for darkness is like light to you.
13For you made the deepest parts of me.
You knit me together in my mother's womb.
14I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Your works are amazing,
and I know this very well.
15My bones were not hidden from you
when I was made in secret,
when I was woven together
in the depths of the earth.
16Your eyes saw my body before it was formed.
All my days were written in your book.
They were planned for me
before even one of them came to be.
17How precious your thoughts are to me, God!
How huge their number is!
18If I tried to count them,
they would be more than the grains of sand.
And when I wake up, I am still with you.
19God, if only you would kill the wicked!
Get away from me, you bloodthirsty men!
20They speak about you with lies.
Your enemies misuse your name.
21Don't I hate those who hate you, LORD?
Don't I loathe those who rise up against you?
22I hate them with total hatred.
I count them as my enemies.
23Search me, God, and know my heart.
Test me and know my worries.
24See if there is any way in me that offends you.
Lead me in the way that lasts forever.
