1Who has believed our message?
To whom has the LORD shown his powerful arm?
2He grew up before the LORD like a young plant,
like a root coming out of dry ground.
He had no fine looks or royal beauty to draw us to him.
There was nothing in how he looked to make us want him.
3People hated him and turned him away.
He was a man of sorrows who knew all about pain.
He was like someone people hide their faces from.
He was hated, and we did not think he was worth anything.
4Surely he took up our weakness.
He carried our sorrows.
But we thought he was being punished.
We thought God was striking him down and making him suffer.
5But he was pierced for our sins.
He was crushed for our wrongs.
The punishment that brought us peace was on him.
By his wounds we are healed.
6All of us, like sheep, have wandered away.
Each of us has turned to go our own way.
And the LORD has put on him
the sin of us all.
7He was treated cruelly and made to suffer,
yet he did not open his mouth.
He was led like a lamb to be killed.
A sheep is silent before those who cut its wool.
In the same way, he did not open his mouth.
8He was taken away by cruel judging.
Who can talk about his descendants?
For he was cut off from the land of the living.
He was struck down for the sins of my people.
9They gave him a grave with the wicked.
He was with a rich man in his death.
Yet he had done nothing violent.
He had never told a lie.
10Yet it was the LORD's plan to crush him
and make him suffer.
And when his life is made a guilt offering,
he will see his children.
He will live a long time.
And the LORD's good plan will succeed in his hand.
11After his soul has suffered so much,
he will see the light of life and be satisfied.
My righteous Servant will make many people right with God
by what he knows.
He will carry their sins.
12So I will give him a share with the great.
He will divide the loot with the strong.
For he poured out his life to death.
He was counted with the sinners.
Yet he carried the sin of many people.
He prayed for those who did wrong.
