1"Shout for joy, you woman who could not have children,
you who have never given birth.
Burst into song and shout out loud,
you who have never felt the pains of birth.
For the woman left alone will have more children
than the woman who has a husband,"
says the LORD.
2"Make the space for your tent bigger.
Stretch out the curtains of your home.
Do not hold back.
Make your ropes longer.
Drive your tent stakes in deep.
3For you will spread out to the right and to the left.
Your children will take over the lands of the nations.
They will live in the cities that were left empty.
4Do not be afraid, for you will not be put to shame.
Do not be scared, for you will not be brought low.
For you will forget the shame of when you were young.
You will not remember anymore
the disgrace of being a widow.
5For your husband is the one who made you.
The LORD of Hosts is his name.
The Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer.
He is called the God of all the earth.
6For the LORD has called you back.
You were like a wife who was left alone and hurt deep inside.
You were like a young wife who was sent away,"
says your God.
7"For a short moment I forsook you.
But with great love and mercy I will bring you back.
8In a flood of anger
I hid my face from you for a moment.
But with kindness that lasts forever
I will show you mercy,"
says the LORD your Redeemer.
9"For to me this is like the days of Noah.
Then I promised that the waters of Noah's flood
would never cover the earth again.
So now I have promised that I will not be angry with you.
I will not scold you.
10The mountains may be moved,
and the hills may be shaken.
But my faithful love will not leave you.
My covenant of peace will not be broken,"
says the LORD, who has mercy on you.
11"You city who suffers, beaten by storms, with no one to comfort you,
I will set your stones in shining black mortar.
I will lay your foundations with sapphires.
12I will make your towers out of rubies.
I will make your gates out of sparkling jewels.
I will make all your walls out of precious stones.
13Then the LORD will teach all your sons.
And they will have great peace and well-being.
14You will be set up firmly in righteousness.
You will be far from cruel treatment,
for you will have nothing to fear.
Terror will be far away.
It will not come near you.
15If anyone attacks you, it will not be my doing.
Whoever attacks you will fall because of you.
16Look, I created the blacksmith.
He blows on the coals to make a fire.
He makes a weapon fit for its job.
And I created the destroyer to bring ruin.
17No weapon made to fight against you will succeed.
You will prove wrong every tongue that blames you.
This is what the servants of the LORD receive.
I am the one who proves them right,"
says the LORD.
