1On that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:
We have a strong city.
Salvation is its walls and towers.
2Open the gates so a righteous nation can come in,
a nation that stays faithful.
3You will keep in perfect peace
the one whose mind stays steady,
because he trusts in you.
4Trust in the LORD forever,
because GOD the LORD is the Rock that lasts forever.
5He has brought down those who live up high.
He brings the proud city low.
He brings it down to the ground.
He throws it into the dust.
6Feet trample it down,
the feet of those who were treated badly,
the steps of the poor.
7The path of those who do what is right is level.
You make a straight, smooth path for honest people.
8Yes, LORD, we wait for you.
We walk in the path of your judgments.
Your name and your fame
are what our hearts long for.
9My soul longs for you in the night.
Yes, my spirit looks for you at dawn.
For when your judgments come on the earth,
the people of the world learn what is right.
10Grace may be shown to a wicked man,
but he does not learn what is right.
Even in a land where people do right, he does wrong.
He does not see how great the LORD is.
11LORD, your hand is raised up,
but they do not see it.
They will see your zeal for your people,
and they will be put to shame.
The fire saved for your enemies will burn them up!
12LORD, you will give us peace.
For everything we have done,
you have done for us.
13LORD our God, other masters besides you have ruled over us.
But your name is the only one we honor.
14The dead will not live again.
The spirits of the dead will not rise.
That is why you punished them and destroyed them.
You wiped out every memory of them.
15LORD, you have made the nation bigger.
You have made the nation bigger.
You have won glory for yourself.
You have pushed out all the borders of the land.
16LORD, they looked for you in their trouble.
When you corrected them,
they could only whisper a prayer.
17A pregnant woman about to give birth
twists and cries out in pain.
That is how we were before you, LORD.
18We were pregnant. We twisted in pain.
But we gave birth only to wind.
We have not brought saving help to the earth.
We have not brought any life into the world.
19Your dead will live.
Their bodies will rise.
You who lie in the dust, wake up and sing for joy!
For your dew is like the morning dew.
The earth will give birth to her dead.
20Go, my people, into your rooms.
Shut your doors behind you.
Hide for a little while,
until the anger has passed by.
21For look, the LORD is coming out from his home.
He is coming to punish the people of the earth for their sin.
The earth will show the blood spilled on it.
It will not hide its dead anymore.
