1On that day the LORD will take his sword.
It is sharp and great and strong.
He will judge Leviathan, the serpent that runs away,
Leviathan, the serpent that coils.
He will kill the dragon of the sea. 2On that day:
"Sing about a fruitful vineyard. 3I, the LORD, take care of it.
I water it all the time.
I guard it night and day
so no one can harm it. 4I am not angry.
If only thorns and briers would fight me!
I would march against them and trample them.
I would burn them all up. 5Or let them come to me for safety.
Let them make peace with me.
Yes, let them make peace with me." 6In the days to come, Jacob will take root.
Israel will bud and bloom.
They will fill the whole world with fruit. 7Has the LORD struck Israel
the way he struck those who struck her?
Was she killed
the way those who killed her were killed? 8You fought against her by war and exile.
You drove her away with your fierce wind,
like on a day when the east wind blows. 9So Jacob's guilt will be paid for.
This will be the full result of taking away his sin:
When he makes all the altar stones
like chalk that has been crushed to bits,
no Asherah poles or incense altars will be left standing.a 10The walled city is empty.
It is a home left behind,
a wilderness no one lives in.
There the calves eat grass and lie down.
They strip its branches bare. 11When its branches are dry, they are broken off.
Women come and use them to start fires.
For this is a people who do not understand.
So their Maker has no pity on them.
Their Creator shows them no kindness. 12On that day the LORD will thresh
from the flowing Euphrates River to the Wadi of Egypt.
And you, Israelites, will be gathered one by one. 13On that day a great ram's horn will blow.
Those who were dying in Assyria will come.
Those who were sent away to Egypt will come too.
They will worship the LORD
on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.
