1So we must pay even closer attention to what we have heard. Then we won't drift away from it. 2The message spoken through angels had to be obeyed. Every wrong and every act of disobedience got the punishment it deserved. If that is so, 3then how will we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? The Lord himself first told about this salvation. Then those who heard him proved it was true to us. 4God also showed it was true. He did this through signs, wonders, and all kinds of miracles. He also gave gifts of the Holy Spirit as he chose. 5God has not put angels in charge of the world to come. That is the world we are talking about. 6Somewhere in Scripture someone says, "What is man that you think about him? What is the son of man that you care for him? 7You made him a little lower than the angels. You crowned him with glory and honor. 8You put everything under his feet." When God put all things under him, he left nothing out of his control. But right now we don't yet see everything under his control. 9But we do see Jesus. He was made a little lower than the angels. Now he is crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death. This was so that by God's grace he might taste death for everyone. 10God is bringing many children to glory. All things exist for him and through him. So it was right for God to make Jesus perfect through suffering. Jesus is the one who leads them to salvation.a 11Jesus makes people holy. And the people he makes holy are in the same family as he is. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters. 12He says, "I will tell my brothers and sisters about your name. I will sing your praises when your people gather." 13He also says, "I will put my trust in him." And he says again, "Here I am, with the children God has given me." 14The children are people with flesh and blood. So Jesus also became human like them. He did this so that by his death he could destroy the one who has the power of death. That one is the devil. 15Jesus did this to set people free. All their lives they had been slaves to their fear of death. 16It is clear that he doesn't come to help angels. He helps the children of Abraham. 17That's why he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every way. Then he could be a high priest who is kind and faithful in serving God. And he could make atonement for the people's sins. 18Jesus himself suffered when he was tempted. So he is able to help people who are being tempted.
