1This is what the LORD says:
"Moab has sinned three times, even four.
I will not take back my judgment,
because he burned the bones of Edom's king
until they turned to lime. 2So I will send fire on Moab.
It will burn up the strong towers of Kerioth.
Moab will die in the uproar of battle,
with war cries and the blast of the ram's horn. 3I will cut off the ruler of Moab.
I will kill all its leaders with him,"
says the LORD. 4This is what the LORD says:
"Judah has sinned three times, even four.
I will not take back my judgment,
because they have turned away from the Law of the LORD.
They have not kept his rules.
They have been led off track by lies,
the same lies their fathers followed. 5So I will send fire on Judah.
It will burn up the strong towers of Jerusalem." 6This is what the LORD says:
"Israel has sinned three times, even four.
I will not take back my judgment,
because they sell innocent people for silver.
They sell needy people for a pair of sandals. 7They stomp on the heads of the poor
as if they were dirt on the ground.
They shove needy people out of the way.
A man and his father sleep with the same girl.
In this way they treat my holy name as if it were not holy. 8They lie down by every altar
on clothes taken to make sure debts were paid.
In the house of their God
they drink wine paid for with fines. 9"Yet I was the one who wiped out the Amorite in front of them.
He was as tall as the cedar trees.
He was as strong as the oak trees.
But I destroyed him, from his fruit above to his roots below. 10I brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
I led you for forty years in the wilderness.
I did this so you could take over the land of the Amorite. 11I chose some of your sons to be prophets.
I chose some of your young men to be Nazirites.
Isn't this true, people of Israel?"
declares the LORD.a 12"But you made the Nazirites drink wine.
You ordered the prophets not to prophesy. 13Look! I am about to crush you where you stand,
the way a cart full of grain crushes. 14Fast runners will not get away.
Strong people will find their strength is no help.
Mighty soldiers will not save their own lives. 15The archer will not stand his ground.
The quick runner will not escape.
The horseman will not save his life. 16Even the bravest soldiers
will run away naked on that day,"
declares the LORD.
Notes
- a 2:11 Nazirites were people who made a special promise to set themselves apart for God. They did not drink wine.
