1These are the words of Amos. He was one of the sheep farmers of Tekoa. This is what he saw about Israel. It was two years before the earthquake. Uzziah was king of Judah then, and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel. 2He said:
"The LORD roars from Zion.
He shouts from Jerusalem.
The shepherds' fields mourn,
and the top of Carmel dries up." 3This is what the LORD says:
"Damascus has sinned three times, even four.
I will not take back my judgment,
because they crushed Gilead
with iron sleds for threshing grain. 4So I will send fire on the house of Hazael.
It will burn up the strong towers of Ben-hadad. 5I will break down the gates of Damascus.
I will cut off the ruler in the Valley of Aven.
I will cut off the one who holds the king's rod in Beth-eden.
The people of Aram will be taken away to Kir,"
says the LORD.a 6This is what the LORD says:
"Gaza has sinned three times, even four.
I will not take back my judgment,
because they carried off a whole people as captives
and handed them over to Edom. 7So I will send fire on the walls of Gaza.
It will burn up its strong towers. 8I will cut off the ruler of Ashdod.
I will cut off the one who holds the king's rod in Ashkelon.
I will turn my hand against Ekron.
The rest of the Philistines will die,"
says the Lord GOD. 9This is what the LORD says:
"Tyre has sinned three times, even four.
I will not take back my judgment,
because they handed over a whole group of captives to Edom.
They broke a covenant made between brothers. 10So I will send fire on the walls of Tyre.
It will burn up its strong towers." 11This is what the LORD says:
"Edom has sinned three times, even four.
I will not take back my judgment,
because he chased his brother with the sword.
He choked off all pity.
His anger raged all the time.
His rage burned on and never stopped. 12So I will send fire on Teman.
It will burn up the strong towers of Bozrah." 13This is what the LORD says:
"The Ammonites have sinned three times, even four.
I will not take back my judgment,
because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead.
They did it to make their own land bigger. 14So I will light a fire in the walls of Rabbah.
It will burn up its strong towers.
There will be war cries on the day of battle.
There will be a wild wind on the day of the storm. 15Their king will be taken away as a captive.
He and his princes will go together,"
says the LORD.
