1People of Israel, listen to this word the LORD has spoken against you. It is against the whole family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt: 2"Of all the families on earth,
you are the only ones I have known as my own.
So I will punish you for all your sins." 3Can two people walk together
if they have not agreed where to go? 4Does a lion roar in the forest
if he has no prey?
Does a young lion growl in his den
if he has caught nothing? 5Does a bird land in a trap
if no bait has been set?
Does a trap spring up from the ground
if it has nothing to catch? 6If a ram's horn is blown in a city,
don't the people shake with fear?
If disaster comes to a city,
isn't it the LORD who has caused it? 7For sure, the Lord GOD does nothing
without showing his plan to his servants the prophets. 8The lion has roared.
Who will not be afraid?
The Lord GOD has spoken.
Who will not prophesy? 9Announce this to the strong towers of Ashdod
and to the strong towers of Egypt:
"Gather on the mountains of Samaria.
See the great disorder in the city.
See how people are crushed and mistreated there." 10"For they don't know how to do what is right,"
declares the LORD.
"They fill their strong towers
with things taken by violence and robbery." 11So this is what the Lord GOD says:
"An enemy will surround the land.
He will pull down your forts.
He will rob your strong towers." 12This is what the LORD says:
"A shepherd may pull out of a lion's mouth
only two legs or a piece of an ear.
In the same way, the Israelites who live in Samaria will be rescued.
All that will be left is the corner of a bed
or the cushion of a couch. 13Listen, and give a warning against the family of Jacob,"
declares the Lord GOD, the God of Hosts. 14"On the day I punish Israel for their sins,
I will destroy the altars of Bethel.
The horns of the altar will be cut off.
They will fall to the ground. 15I will tear down the winter house
along with the summer house.
The houses decorated with ivory will be destroyed.
The great houses will come to an end,"
declares the LORD.
