1This is the revelation of Jesus Christ. God gave it to him to show his servants what must soon take place. Jesus made it known by sending his angel to his servant John. 2John tells about everything he saw. This is the word of God and the witness of Jesus Christ. 3Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy out loud. And blessed are those who hear it and obey what is written in it. For the time is near. 4From John. To the seven churches in the province of Asia. Grace and peace to you from him who is, who was, and who is to come. Grace and peace also from the seven spirits in front of his throne. 5And grace and peace from Jesus Christ. He is the faithful witness. He is the first to rise from the dead. He is the ruler of the kings of the earth. He loves us. He has set us free from our sins by his blood. 6He has made us a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father. To him be glory and power forever and ever! Amen. 7Look, he is coming with the clouds! Every eye will see him, even those who pierced him. All the tribes of the earth will mourn because of him. So it will be! Amen. 8"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God. He is the one who is, who was, and who is to come. He is the Almighty.a 9I am John, your brother. I share with you in the trouble, the kingdom, and the patient strength we have in Jesus. I was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and because I told about Jesus. 10On the Lord's day I was in the Spirit. Behind me I heard a loud voice like a trumpet. 11It said, "Write on a scroll what you see. Send it to the seven churches. Send it to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea." 12I turned around to see whose voice was speaking to me. When I turned, I saw seven gold lampstands. 13Among the lampstands was someone like the Son of Man. He wore a long robe with a gold sash around his chest. 14The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow. His eyes were like a blazing fire. 15His feet were like shiny bronze heated in a furnace. His voice was like the roar of rushing waters. 16In his right hand he held seven stars. A sharp sword with two edges came out of his mouth. His face was like the sun shining at its brightest. 17When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. But he put his right hand on me. He said, "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18I am the Living One. I was dead, but look, now I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of Death and Hades. 19So write down what you have seen. Write what is now, and what will happen after this. 20Here is the secret meaning of the seven stars you saw in my right hand. And here is the meaning of the seven gold lampstands. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches. The seven lampstands are the seven churches.
