1A psalm of Asaph.
God, the nations have attacked the land that belongs to you.
They have made your holy temple unclean.
They have turned Jerusalem into piles of rubble. 2They have given the dead bodies of your servants
as food to the birds of the sky.
They have given the bodies of your faithful people
to the wild animals of the earth. 3They have poured out their blood like water
all around Jerusalem.
There is no one to bury the dead. 4Our neighbors insult us.
The people around us laugh at us and make fun of us. 5How long, LORD?
Will you be angry forever?
Will your jealous anger burn like fire? 6Pour out your anger on the nations that do not know you.
Pour it on the kingdoms that will not call on your name. 7for they have eaten up Jacob.
They have destroyed his homeland. 8Do not hold the sins of the past against us.
Let your mercy come to us quickly,
for we are in great need. 9Help us, God who saves us,
for the glory of your name.
Rescue us and atone for our sins,
for the sake of your name. 10Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?"
Your servants' blood has been spilled.
Let the nations see you pay them back for it.
Let it happen before our eyes. 11May the groans of the prisoners reach you.
By the strength of your arm, keep alive those sentenced to die. 12Lord, our neighbors threw insults at you.
Pay them back seven times over, right into their laps. 13Then we, your people, the sheep of your field,
will thank you forever.
We will tell of your praise
to every generation.
