1For the music leader. A maskil of the sons of Korah.
God, we have heard it with our ears.
Our fathers have told us what you did in their days,
in the days long ago. 2With your hand you drove out the nations.
Then you planted our fathers in the land.
You crushed the peoples and threw them out. 3For they did not take the land with their own sword.
Their own arm did not win for them.
It was your right hand and your arm.
It was the light of your face, because you loved them. 4God, you are my King.
You command victories for Jacob. 5With your help we push back our enemies.
In your name we stomp on our enemies. 6For I do not trust in my bow.
My sword does not save me. 7For you save us from our enemies.
You put those who hate us to shame. 8We have bragged about God all day long.
We will praise your name forever. Selah 9But you have turned us away and brought us low.
You no longer go out with our armies. 10You made us run back from the enemy.
Those who hate us have robbed us. 11You gave us up like sheep to be eaten.
You scattered us among the nations. 12You sell your people for nothing.
You make no money from selling them. 13You made our neighbors look down on us.
Those around us mock us and laugh at us. 14You made us a joke among the nations.
The peoples laugh at us. 15All day long my shame is in front of me.
My face is covered with shame, 16because of the voice of those who mock me and insult me,
because of the enemy who wants to get even. 17All this has happened to us,
even though we have not forgotten you.
We have not been false to your covenant. 18Our hearts have not turned back.
Our steps have not wandered from your path. 19But you crushed us in the place where jackals live.
You covered us with the deepest darkness. 20If we had forgotten the name of our God,
or lifted our hands to a foreign god, 21wouldn't God have found it out?
For he knows the secrets of the heart. 22Yet because of you we face death all day long.
We are thought of as sheep to be killed. 23Wake up, Lord! Why are you sleeping?
Get up! Do not turn us away forever. 24Why do you hide your face?
Why do you forget our pain and how we are crushed? 25For our soul has sunk down to the dust.
Our bodies lie flat on the ground. 26Get up and help us!
Redeem us because of your faithful love.
