1For the choir leader. A psalm of David.
LORD, I have run to you to be safe.
Never let me be put to shame.
Save me because you are righteous.
2Turn your ear to me.
Hurry and rescue me.
Be my rock where I am safe,
a strong fort that saves me.
3For you are my rock and my fort.
Lead me and guide me for the honor of your name.
4You free me from the net that was set for me,
for you are my safe place.
5Into your hands I give my spirit.
You have redeemed me, LORD, God of truth.
6I hate those who hold on to worthless idols.
But I trust in the LORD.
7I will be glad and full of joy in your faithful love.
For you have seen my suffering.
You have known the deep pain of my soul.
8You have not handed me over to my enemy.
You have set my feet in an open place.
9Be kind to me, LORD, for I am in trouble.
My eyes are weak from sadness.
My soul and body are weak too.
10For my life is used up by sadness.
My years are used up by groaning.
My sin has drained my strength.
My bones are wasting away.
11All my enemies treat me with shame.
My neighbors treat me even worse.
My friends are afraid of me.
They run away when they see me on the street.
12I am forgotten like a dead man.
No one thinks of me.
I am like a broken pot.
13For I hear many people telling lies about me.
There is terror all around me.
They make plans together against me.
They plot to kill me.
14But I trust in you, LORD.
I say, "You are my God."
15My times are in your hands.
Rescue me from my enemies,
from those who chase me.
16Let your face shine on your servant.
Save me because of your faithful love.
17LORD, do not let me be put to shame,
for I have called on you.
Let the wicked be put to shame.
Let them lie silent in the grave.a
18Make their lying lips be quiet.
Those lips speak proudly against people who do right.
They are full of pride and hate.
19Your goodness is so great!
You have stored it up for those who fear you.
You give it to those who run to you to be safe,
and everyone can see it.
20You hide them in the secret place where you are,
safe from the evil plans of people.
You keep them hidden in your shelter,
safe from tongues that blame them.
21Praise be to the LORD!
For he showed me his faithful love
when I was in a city under attack.
22I was afraid, and I said,
"I am cut off from your sight!"
But you heard me beg for mercy
when I called to you for help.
23Love the LORD, all his people!
The LORD keeps the faithful safe.
But he pays back the proud in full.
24Be strong and courageous,
all you who hope in the LORD.
