1This is the vision of Obadiah.
This is what the Lord GOD says about Edom.
We have heard a message from the LORD.
A messenger has been sent to the nations to say,
"Get up! Let's go to battle against Edom!"
2"Look! I will make you small among the nations.
People will hate you very much.
3Your proud heart has fooled you.
You live in the cracks of the rocks.
You make your home up high.
You say to yourself,
'Who can bring me down to the ground?'
4You may fly high like the eagle.
You may build your nest among the stars.
But I will bring you down even from there,"
declares the LORD.
5"If thieves came to you,
if robbers came at night,
oh, how you will be ruined!
Wouldn't they steal only what they wanted?
If grape pickers came to you,
wouldn't they leave a few grapes behind?
6But Esau will be robbed of everything!
All his hidden treasures will be searched out!
7All your partners will push you out to the border.
Your friends will trick you and beat you.
Those who eat your bread will set a trap for you.
You will not even know it.
8On that day," declares the LORD,
"won't I destroy the wise men of Edom?
Won't I destroy the men of understanding in the mountains of Esau?
9Then your mighty soldiers, Teman, will be terrified.
So everyone in the mountains of Esau
will be cut down and killed.
10You did violence to your brother Jacob.
So you will be covered with shame.
You will be wiped out forever.
11On the day you stood off to the side,
strangers carried away his riches.
Foreigners came in through his gate.
They cast lots for Jerusalem.
And you were just like one of them.
12You should not gloat on that day,
the day your brother had trouble.
You should not be glad about the people of Judah
on the day they were destroyed.
You should not brag
on the day of their distress.
13You should not march through the gate of my people
on the day of their disaster.
You should not gloat over their suffering
on the day of their disaster.
You should not take their riches
on the day of their disaster.
14You should not stand where the roads cross
to cut down those who were running away.
You should not hand over their survivors
on the day of their distress.
15For the Day of the LORD is near for all the nations.
What you have done will be done to you.
What you deserve will come back on your own head.
16For just as you drank on my holy mountain,
so all the nations will drink without stopping.
They will drink and swallow it down.
They will be as if they had never been.
17But on Mount Zion there will be rescue.
It will be holy.
The family of Jacob will take back what belongs to them.
18Then the family of Jacob will be a blazing fire.
The family of Joseph will be a flame.
But the family of Esau will be dry straw.
Jacob will set it on fire and burn it up.
So no one from the family of Esau will be left alive."
For the LORD has spoken.
19People from the Negev will take over the mountains of Esau.
People from the hills in the west will take over the land of the Philistines.
They will take over the fields of Ephraim and Samaria.
Benjamin will take over Gilead.
20The captives from this army of Israelites
will take over the land of the Canaanites as far as Zarephath.
The captives from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad
will take over the towns of the Negev.
21Those who rescue will go up on Mount Zion.
They will rule over the mountains of Esau.
And the kingdom will belong to the LORD.
