1I saw the Lord standing beside the altar. He said:
"Strike the tops of the pillars
so that the doorways shake.
Bring them down on the heads of all the people.
I will kill the rest with the sword.
Not one of them who runs will get away.
Not one of them will escape.
2They may dig down to the grave,
but my hand will take them from there.
They may climb up to heaven,
but I will pull them down from there.a
3They may hide on top of Mount Carmel,
but I will hunt them down and grab them there.
They may hide from me at the bottom of the sea,
but I will order the serpent to bite them there.
4Their enemies may drive them away as captives,
but I will order the sword to kill them there.
I will keep my eyes on them
to bring them harm and not good."
5The Lord GOD of Hosts touches the earth, and it melts.
All who live in it mourn.
The whole land rises like the Nile River.
Then it sinks down like the river of Egypt.
6He builds his high rooms in the heavens.
He sets the dome of the sky over the earth.
He calls for the waters of the sea
and pours them out over the land.
The LORD is his name.
7"People of Israel, aren't you the same to me as the Cushites?"
declares the LORD.
"I brought Israel up from the land of Egypt.
But didn't I also bring the Philistines from Caphtor
and the Arameans from Kir?
8For sure, the eyes of the Lord GOD are watching this sinful kingdom.
I will wipe it off the face of the earth.
But I will not wipe out the family of Jacob completely,"
declares the LORD.
9"For sure, I will give the command.
I will shake the family of Israel among all the nations,
the way grain is shaken in a sieve.
But not one pebble will fall to the ground.
10All the sinners among my people will die by the sword.
They are the ones who say,
'Trouble will never come near us or meet us.'"
11"On that day I will set up again the fallen tent of David.
I will fix the holes in it.
I will rebuild what was ruined.
I will build it again as it was long ago.
12I will do this so that they will take over what is left of Edom
and all the nations that are called by my name,"
declares the LORD, who will do this.
13"Look! The days are coming," declares the LORD,
"when the one plowing will catch up with the one harvesting.
The one stomping grapes will catch up with the one planting seed.
Sweet wine will drip from the mountains.
It will flow down all the hills.
14I will bring my people Israel back from captivity.
They will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them.
They will plant vineyards and drink their wine.
They will plant gardens and eat their fruit.
15I will plant them firmly in their own land.
They will never again be pulled up
from the land I have given them,"
says the LORD your God.
