NahumChapter 1

1This is a heavy message against Nineveh. It is the book of the vision of Nahum, who was from Elkosh.a 2The LORD is a jealous God who pays back wrong.
The LORD pays back, and he is full of anger.
The LORD takes revenge on his foes.
He keeps his anger stored up for his enemies.
3The LORD is slow to get angry, and his power is great.
The LORD will never let the guilty go unpunished.
He makes his path in the whirlwind and the storm.
The clouds are the dust under his feet.
4He scolds the sea, and it dries up.
He makes all the rivers run dry.
Bashan and Carmel dry up.
The flowers of Lebanon droop and fade.
5The mountains shake in front of him.
The hills melt away.
The earth trembles when he is there.
The whole world and all who live in it shake.
6Who can stand up to his anger?
Who can bear his burning anger?
His anger pours out like fire.
Even the rocks are smashed in front of him.
7The LORD is good.
He is a safe fortress on the day of trouble.
He cares for those who trust in him.
8But he will put an end to Nineveh with a huge flood.
He will chase his enemies into darkness.
9Whatever you plan against the LORD, he will bring it to an end.
Trouble will not rise up a second time.
10For they will be tangled up as if in thorns.
They will be swallowed up like a drunkard's drink.
They will burn up like straw that is fully dry.
11Nineveh, someone has come out from you who plans evil against the LORD.
He gives wicked advice.
12This is what the LORD says:
"They may have allies, and there may be many of them.
But they will be cut down and pass away.
Judah, I have made you suffer.
But I will not make you suffer anymore.
13For now I will break their yoke off your neck.
I will tear off your chains."
14Nineveh, the LORD has given a command about you:
"You will have no children to carry on your name.
I will destroy the carved idols and metal idols in the house of your gods.
I will get your grave ready, because you are worthless."
15Look to the mountains!
See the feet of someone who brings good news and announces peace!
Judah, celebrate your feasts.
Do what you promised in your vows.
For the wicked will never march through you again.
They will be cut off completely.
