1Now listen to what the LORD says:
"Get up! Argue your case in front of the mountains.
Let the hills hear your voice.
2Listen, you mountains, to the LORD's charges.
Listen, you strong foundations of the earth.
For the LORD has a case against his people.
He will argue it against Israel.
3'My people, what have I done to you?
How have I made you tired of me?
Tell me!'
4For I brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
I redeemed you from the land where you were slaves.
I sent Moses to lead you.
I also sent Aaron and Miriam.
5My people, remember what Balak king of Moab planned.
Remember what Balaam son of Beor answered him.
Remember your journey from Shittim to Gilgal,
so that you will know that the LORD is righteous.'"
6What should I bring when I come before the LORD?
What should I bring when I bow down before God on high?
Should I come to him with burnt offerings,
with calves a year old?
7Would the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams?
Would he be pleased with ten thousand rivers of oil?
Should I give my firstborn child for my wrongs?
Should I give a child of my own body for my sin?
8He has shown you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD ask of you?
To act justly,
to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God.
9The voice of the LORD calls out to the city.
(It is wise to fear your name.)
"Pay attention to the rod of punishment
and to the One who sent it.
10House of the wicked, can I forget any longer
the treasures you got by evil?
Can I forget your measuring basket that is too small?
It is cursed.a
11Can I let off people who use cheating scales
or bags of false weights?
12For the rich people of the city are full of violence.
The people who live there tell lies.
The words in their mouths are false.
13So I am striking you hard.
I am ruining you because of your sins.
14You will eat, but you will not be full.
You will still be hungry.
You will store things up, but you will not keep them.
And what you save, I will give to the sword.
15You will plant, but you will not harvest.
You will press olives,
but you will not rub yourselves with the oil.
You will crush grapes,
but you will not drink the wine.
16You have kept the rules of Omri.
You have done all the things Ahab's family did.
You have followed their advice.
So I will make you a ruin.
I will make your people a joke.
You will be mocked by the nations."
