1Now Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu took their fire pans. They put fire in them and added incense. They offered fire before the LORD that he had not allowed. It went against his command.a 2So fire came out from the presence of the LORD and burned them up. They died before the LORD. 3Then Moses said to Aaron, "This is what the LORD meant when he said,
'To those who come near me I will show that I am holy.
Before all the people I will show my glory.'"
But Aaron said nothing.
4Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan. They were sons of Uzziel, Aaron's uncle. Moses said to them, "Come here. Carry the bodies of your cousins away from the front of the holy place. Take them outside the camp." 5So they came and carried them outside the camp, still in their tunics, as Moses had said. 6Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, "Do not let your hair hang loose, and do not tear your clothes. If you do, you will die, and the LORD will be angry with the whole community. But your relatives, the whole house of Israel, may mourn because of the fire the LORD has sent.b 7Do not go out of the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, or you will die, because the LORD's anointing oil is on you." So they did what Moses said. 8Then the LORD said to Aaron, 9"You and your sons must not drink wine or beer when you go into the Tent of Meeting. If you do, you will die. This is a law that lasts forever, for all the generations to come. 10You must know the difference between what is holy and what is common. You must know the difference between what is clean and what is unclean. 11Do this so that you may teach the Israelites all the laws the LORD has given them through Moses." 12Moses said to Aaron and his sons who were left, Eleazar and Ithamar, "Take the grain offering that is left from the food offerings to the LORD. Eat it without yeast beside the altar, because it is most holy. 13Eat it in a holy place, because it is your share and your sons' share of the food offerings to the LORD. For this is what I have been commanded. 14You and your sons and daughters may eat the breast of the wave offering and the thigh that is given. Eat them in a place that is clean by the law. That is because these shares have been given to you and your children from the peace offerings of the sons of Israel. 15They are to bring the thigh that is given and the breast of the wave offering, along with the fat parts of the food offerings. They are to wave them before the LORD as a wave offering. They will belong to you and your children forever, as the LORD has commanded." 16Later, Moses looked hard for the goat of the sin offering. He found that it had been burned up! He was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's sons who were left. He asked them, 17"Why didn't you eat the sin offering in the holy place? For it is most holy. It was given to you to take away the guilt of the community, by making atonement for them before the LORD. 18Its blood was not brought inside the holy place. So you should have eaten it in the holy area, as I commanded." 19But Aaron answered Moses, "Look, today they offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD. Since these things have happened to me, if I had eaten the sin offering today, would the LORD have been pleased?" 20When Moses heard this, he was satisfied.
