1But Jonah was very upset, and he became angry. 2So he prayed to the LORD. He said, "LORD, isn't this just what I said when I was still at home? That's why I was so quick to run away to Tarshish. I knew you are a kind and caring God. You are slow to get angry. You are full of faithful love. You hold back from sending disaster. 3So now, LORD, please take my life. It's better for me to die than to live." 4But the LORD answered, "Is it right for you to be angry?" 5Then Jonah went out of the city and sat down east of it. He made a shelter for himself there. He sat in its shade to see what would happen to the city. 6Then the LORD God sent a vine. It grew up over Jonah to give shade for his head. It made him feel better. Jonah was very happy about the plant. 7But at dawn the next day, God sent a worm. It chewed the plant, and the plant dried up. 8When the sun came up, God sent a burning hot east wind. The sun beat down on Jonah's head. He grew weak and wanted to die. He said, "It's better for me to die than to live." 9Then God asked Jonah, "Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?" "Yes, it is," Jonah answered. "I'm angry enough to die!" 10But the LORD said, "You cared about this plant. Yet you did not take care of it or make it grow. It came up in one night and died in one night. 11So shouldn't I care about the great city of Nineveh? It has more than 120,000 people who can't tell their right hand from their left. And it has many animals too."
