1Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time. 2He said, "Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce to it the message I give you." 3This time Jonah got up and went to Nineveh, just as the LORD said. Nineveh was a very large city. It took three days to go through it. 4On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He shouted, "Forty more days, and Nineveh will be destroyed!" 5The people of Nineveh believed God. They announced a fast. They all put on sackcloth, from the most important to the least important. 6News of this reached the king of Nineveh. He got up from his throne. He took off his royal robe. He covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in ashes. 7Then he sent out an announcement in Nineveh: "This is an order from the king and his nobles. No person or animal, no herd or flock, may taste anything at all. They must not eat or drink. 8Both people and animals must be covered with sackcloth. Everyone must cry out to God with all their heart. Each one must turn from his evil ways. Each must stop the violence he does with his hands. 9Who knows? God may turn and change his mind. He may turn away from his burning anger, so that we will not perish." 10God saw what they did. He saw that they turned from their evil ways. So he changed his mind. He did not bring on them the disaster he had warned about.
