JobChapter 17

1"My spirit is broken.
My days are snuffed out.
The grave is waiting for me. 2Surely people who mock me are all around me.
My eyes must keep looking at their rebellion. 3Please give me the promise you ask for.
Who else will stand up to pay for me? 4You have closed their minds so they can't understand.
So you won't lift them up. 5If a man turns in his friends for money,
the eyes of his children will fail. 6God has made me a joke among the people.
I am a man whose face they spit in. 7My eyes have grown weak from sorrow.
My whole body is just a shadow. 8Honest people are shocked by this.
Innocent people are stirred up against the godless. 9Yet a righteous person holds to his path.
The one with clean hands grows stronger. 10But all of you, come back and try again.
I won't find a wise man among you. 11My days are over.
My plans are broken off.
Even the wishes of my heart are gone. 12These men turn night into day.
They say light is near when it is dark. 13If I look to the grave as my home,
if I make my bed in the dark,a 14and say to the rotting pit, 'You are my father,'
and to the worm, 'My mother' or 'My sister,' 15where then is my hope?
Who can see any hope for me? 16Will my hope go down to the gates of the grave?
Will we go down into the dust together?"b
