1Then Zophar from Naamah answered: 2"Should all these words go without an answer?
Should a man who talks so much be proved right?
3Should your empty talk make others be quiet?
Will you make fun of others and not be corrected?
4You have said, 'What I believe is right.
I am pure in your sight.'
5But I wish God would speak.
I wish he would open his lips against you.
6I wish he would show you the secrets of wisdom.
For true wisdom has two sides.
Know this: God is asking less of you than your sin deserves.
7Can you understand the deep things of God?
Can you find the limits of the Almighty?
8They are higher than the heavens. What can you do?
They are deeper than the grave. What can you know?a
9They reach farther than the earth.
They are wider than the sea.
10If God comes by and locks you up,
or if he calls a court together, who can stop him?
11He surely knows when people lie.
When he sees sin, doesn't he take note of it?
12But a foolish man can't become wise,
any more than a wild donkey's colt can be born a man!
13As for you, if you set your heart on God
and lift up your hands to him,
14if you put away the sin that is in your hand,
and let nothing wrong live in your tents,
15Then you will lift up your face with no shame.
You will stand strong and not be afraid.
16For you will forget your misery.
You will remember it only like water that has flowed away.
17Your life will be brighter than the noon sun.
Its darkness will be like the morning.
18You will feel safe, because there is hope.
You will look around and lie down in safety.
19You will lie down, and no one will make you afraid.
Many people will try to win your favor.
20But the eyes of the wicked will fail.
They will find no way to escape.
Their only hope will be to breathe their last."
