1The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bandage up those whose hearts are broken.
He sent me to announce freedom for the captives,
and to set the prisoners free.
2He sent me to announce the year of the LORD's favor
and the day of our God's vengeance.
He sent me to comfort all who mourn.
3He sent me to comfort those in Zion who are sad.
I will give them a beautiful crown instead of ashes.
I will give them the oil of joy instead of sorrow.
I will give them clothes of praise instead of a heavy spirit.
They will be called oaks of righteousness.
The LORD has planted them to show his glory.
4They will rebuild the old ruins.
They will build up the places that were torn down long ago.
They will make the ruined cities new again.
Those cities have been empty for many generations.
5Strangers will stand and take care of your flocks.
Foreigners will plow your fields and work in your vineyards.
6But you will be called the priests of the LORD.
People will say you are servants of our God.
You will feed on the wealth of nations.
You will boast in their riches.
7Instead of shame, my people will get a double share.
Instead of disgrace, they will be glad about what they receive.
So they will receive a double share in their land.
Joy that lasts forever will be theirs.
8For I, the LORD, love what is fair.
I hate robbery and sin.
Because I am faithful, I will reward them.
I will make a covenant with them that lasts forever.
9Their children will be known among the nations.
The ones who come after them will be known among the peoples.
All who see them will say
that they are a people the LORD has blessed.
10I will be very glad in the LORD.
My soul will be full of joy in my God.
For he has dressed me in clothes of salvation.
He has wrapped me in a robe of righteousness.
I am like a groom wearing a priest's headdress.
I am like a bride wearing her jewels.
11The earth makes plants come up.
A garden makes seeds grow.
In the same way, the Lord GOD will make rightness and praise
grow up in front of all the nations.
