1In the year King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord. He was sitting on a throne, high and lifted up. The bottom of his robe filled the temple. 2Seraphim stood above him. Each one had six wings. With two wings they covered their faces. With two they covered their feet. And with two they flew. 3They were calling out to one another, "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts. The whole earth is full of his glory." 4Their voices made the doorposts and the doorways shake. The temple was filled with smoke. 5Then I said, "How terrible for me! I am ruined! For I am a man with unclean lips. And I live among a people with unclean lips. For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Hosts." 6Then one of the seraphim flew to me. In his hand was a burning coal. He had taken it from the altar with tongs. 7He touched my mouth with it and said, "Look, this has touched your lips. Your wrong is taken away. Your sin is atoned for."a 8Then I heard the voice of the Lord. He said, "Whom should I send? Who will go for us?" And I said, "Here I am. Send me!" 9He said, "Go and tell this people, 'Keep on hearing, but never understand. Keep on seeing, but never know what you see.' 10Make the hearts of these people hard. Make their ears deaf, and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes. They might hear with their ears and understand with their hearts. Then they might turn and be healed." 11Then I asked, "Lord, how long?" He answered, "Until the cities lie in ruins with no one living in them. Until the houses are empty and the land is ruined and wasted. 12Until the LORD has sent the people far away, and the land is totally deserted. 13Even if a tenth of the people are left in the land, it will be burned again. But when a terebinth or an oak is cut down, a stump is left. In the same way, the holy seed will be a stump in the land."
