1Ahaz son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah. In his days, Rezin king of Aram marched up to fight against Jerusalem. Pekah son of Remaliah, the king of Israel, went with him. But he could not take the city. 2Then the house of David was told, "Aram has joined forces with Ephraim." So the hearts of Ahaz and his people shook. They shook like trees in the forest when the wind blows. 3Then the LORD said to Isaiah, "Go out to meet Ahaz. Take your son Shear-jashub with you. Meet him at the end of the water channel that flows into the upper pool. It is on the road to the field where cloth is washed. 4Say to him, 'Calm down and be quiet. Do not be afraid. Do not lose heart because of these two smoking stubs of firewood. Don't fear the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and the son of Remaliah. 5For Aram, along with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has made a plan to ruin you. They have said, 6"Let's attack Judah and fill it with terror. Let's split it up among ourselves. Then we can make the son of Tabeal king over it." 7But this is what the Lord GOD says: "It will not stand. It will not happen. 8For the head of Aram is Damascus. The head of Damascus is Rezin. Within sixty-five years, Ephraim will be too broken to be a people. 9The head of Ephraim is Samaria. The head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all."'" 10The LORD spoke to Ahaz again. He said, 11"Ask the LORD your God for a sign. Ask for one from the deepest grave or from the highest heaven."a 12But Ahaz said, "I won't ask. I won't test the LORD." 13Then Isaiah said, "Listen now, house of David! Isn't it enough to wear out people's patience? Will you wear out my God's patience too? 14So the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look! The virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son. She will name him Immanuel.b 15He will be eating curds and honey by the time he knows enough to turn from evil and choose good. 16For before the boy knows enough to turn from evil and choose good, the land of the two kings you fear will be left empty. 17The LORD will bring a time on you, your people, and your father's family like no time since Ephraim broke away from Judah. He will bring the king of Assyria." 18On that day the LORD will whistle for the flies at the farthest streams of the Nile. He will whistle for the bees in the land of Assyria. 19They will all come and settle in the steep valleys and in the cracks of the rocks. They will settle on all the thornbushes and at all the watering holes. 20On that day the Lord will use a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River. That razor is the king of Assyria. He will use it to shave your head and the hair on your legs. He will cut off your beard too. 21On that day a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep. 22They will give so much milk that he will eat curds. For all who are left in the land will eat curds and honey. 23On that day there will be places that had a thousand vines worth a thousand shekels of silver. But only briers and thorns will be found there. 24Men will go there with bows and arrows, for the land will be covered with briers and thorns. 25There were hills that people once dug with hoes. But you will be afraid of the briers and thorns, so you won't go there anymore. Those hills will become places where oxen graze and sheep walk all over.
