1"Go down and sit in the dust,
virgin daughter of Babylon.
Sit on the ground with no throne,
daughter of the Chaldeans!
For no one will call you soft or gentle anymore.
2Take millstones and grind flour.
Take off your veil.
Pull up your skirt and show your legs.
Wade across the streams.
3Your naked body will be uncovered.
Your shame will be shown.
I will take vengeance.
I will spare no one."
4Our Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.
The LORD of Hosts is his name.
5"Sit in silence, and go into the darkness,
daughter of the Chaldeans.
For no one will call you the queen of kingdoms anymore.
6I was angry with my people.
I treated my own people as unholy.
I put them under your control.
You showed them no mercy.
You put a very heavy yoke even on the old people.
7You said, 'I will be queen forever.'
You did not think hard about these things.
You did not think about how they would end.
8So now listen to this, you who love fancy living.
You sit there feeling safe.
You say to yourself, 'I am the only one.
There is no one but me.
I will never be a widow.
I will never lose my children.'
9But both of these things will come on you
in a moment, in a single day.
You will lose your children and become a widow.
These things will come on you in full.
Your many magic tricks will not stop them.
Your powerful spells will not stop them.
10You felt safe in your evil ways.
You said, 'No one sees me.'
Your wisdom and knowledge led you the wrong way.
You said to yourself,
'I am the only one. There is no one but me.'
11But disaster will come on you.
You will not know how to make it go away with magic.
Trouble will fall on you that you cannot stop.
Ruin will come on you all of a sudden,
when you do not expect it.
12So keep on with your spells
and your many magic tricks.
You have worked hard at them since you were young.
Maybe they will help you.
Maybe you will make people afraid!
13All the advice you get has worn you out.
Let your advisers come and save you now.
Let those who study the sky and watch the stars save you.
Each month they tell you what will happen to you.
14They are only like dry straw.
The fire will burn them up.
They cannot save themselves from the power of the flames.
There will be no coals to warm them.
There will be no fire to sit beside.
15That is all they will be to you.
You have worked and traded with them since you were young.
But each of them wanders off his own way.
Not one of them can save you."
