1Come near and listen, you nations.
Pay attention, you peoples.
Let the earth hear, and everything in it.
Let the world hear, and everything that comes from it.
2The LORD is angry with all the nations.
He is furious with all their armies.
He will set them apart to be destroyed.
He will hand them over to be killed.
3Their dead will be thrown out and not buried.
The stink of their bodies will rise.
The mountains will flow with their blood.
4All the stars in the sky will melt away.
The sky will be rolled up like a scroll.
All its stars will fall
like dry leaves falling from a vine,
like leaves falling from a fig tree.
5When my sword has drunk all it wants in the heavens,
then it will come down on Edom,
on the people I have set apart to be destroyed.
6The sword of the LORD is covered in blood.
It drips with fat.
It drips with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat from the kidneys of rams.
For the LORD has a sacrifice in Bozrah.
He has a great killing in the land of Edom.
7The wild oxen will fall with them.
The young bulls will fall with the strong ones.
Their land will be soaked with blood.
Their dirt will be soaked with fat.
8For the LORD has a day of payback.
He has a year of repaying
to defend Zion.
9Edom's streams will be turned into tar.
Her dirt will be turned into sulfur.
Her land will become burning tar.
10The fire will not go out, day or night.
Its smoke will rise forever.
It will lie empty for all time to come.
No one will ever travel through it again.
11The desert owl and the screech owl will own it.
The great owl and the raven will live in it.
The LORD will stretch a measuring line of chaos over Edom.
He will hold up a plumb line of ruin over it.
12No nobles will be left to name a king.
All her princes will be gone.
13Thorns will grow over her towers.
Thistles and briers will cover her fortresses.
She will become a home for jackals,
a place for ostriches to live.
14Desert animals will meet with hyenas.
One wild goat will call to another.
The night creature will settle there
and find a place to rest.a
15The owl will make her nest there.
She will lay and hatch her eggs.
She will gather her young under her shadow.
The birds of prey will gather there too,
each one with its mate.
16Look in the scroll of the LORD and read it:
Not one of these animals will be missing.
Not one will be without her mate.
This is because his mouth has given the order,
and his Spirit will gather them together.
17He has given them their share.
His hand has measured it out for them.
They will own the land forever.
They will live there for all time to come.
