1Look, a king will rule by what is right.
Princes will rule with justice.
2Each one will be like a shelter from the wind
and a safe place from the storm.
Each will be like streams of water in a dry land,
like the shade of a great rock in a hot, dry land.
3Then the eyes of those who see will not be closed anymore.
The ears of those who hear will listen.
4The minds of those who act too fast will know and understand.
Those who stutter will speak clearly and easily.
5A fool will not be called noble anymore.
A worthless person will not be respected.
6A fool speaks foolish things.
His mind plans evil.
He does ungodly things.
He tells lies about the LORD.
He leaves the hungry with nothing.
He keeps the thirsty from getting a drink.
7The weapons of the worthless person do great harm.
He makes evil plans to destroy the poor with lies,
even when the needy are asking for what is right.
8But a noble man makes honest plans.
He stands up for what is good.
9Stand up, you women who are so at ease.
Listen to me.
You daughters who feel so safe,
hear what I say.
10In a little more than a year,
you who feel so safe will shake.
For the grape harvest will fail.
The fruit harvest will not come.
11Shake, you women who live at ease.
Tremble, you daughters who feel so safe.
Take off your clothes.
Put sackcloth around your waists.
12Beat your chests in sorrow for the pleasant fields
and for the fruitful vines,
13and for the land of my people.
It is covered with thorns and briers.
Mourn for every happy house
in this city of parties.
14For the palace will be left empty.
The busy city will be left behind.
The hill and the watchtower will become caves forever.
Wild donkeys will love it there.
Flocks will eat grass there.
15It will be that way until the Spirit is poured out on us from heaven.
Then the desert will become a rich orchard.
The orchard will seem like a forest.
16Then justice will live in the wilderness.
What is right will live in the rich fields.
17Doing what is right will bring peace.
The result of what is right
will be quiet trust forever.
18Then my people will live in a peaceful place.
They will live in safe homes and quiet places of rest.
19But hail will flatten the forest.
The city will be brought down low.
20Blessed are those who plant seeds by every stream,
who let the ox and donkey roam free.
