1Look! The Lord GOD of Hosts
is about to take away from Jerusalem and Judah
all that they lean on and depend on.
He will take away all their food and water,
2the strong man and the warrior,
the judge and the prophet,
the fortune-teller and the elder,
3the captain of fifty and the important man,
the adviser, the skilled magician,
and the clever charmer.
4"I will make mere boys their leaders.
Children will rule over them."
5The people will treat each other cruelly.
Man will fight against man,
and neighbor against neighbor.
The young will rise up against the old.
Worthless people will rise up against the honored.
6A man will grab his brother
in his father's house and say,
"You have a coat. You be our leader!
Take charge of this pile of ruins!"
7On that day he will cry out,
"I am not a healer.
I have no food or clothes in my house.
Do not make me the leader of the people!"
8For Jerusalem has stumbled.
Judah has fallen.
This is because their words and deeds are against the LORD.
They defy his glorious presence.
9The look on their faces is a witness against them.
They show off their sin like Sodom.
They do not hide it.
How terrible for them!
For they have brought disaster on themselves.
10Tell those who do what is right
that things will go well for them,
for they will enjoy the fruit of their work.
11How terrible for the wicked!
Disaster is on them!
For they will be paid back
for what their hands have done.
12Young people treat my people cruelly.
Women rule over them.
My people, your guides lead you the wrong way.
They turn you away from your paths.
13The LORD rises to argue his case.
He stands up to judge the people.
14The LORD brings this charge
against the elders and leaders of his people:
"You are the ones who have eaten up the vineyard.
What you stole from the poor is in your houses.
15Why do you crush my people?
Why do you grind the faces of the poor into the dirt?"
says the Lord GOD of Hosts.
16The LORD also says,
"Because the daughters of Zion are proud,
walking with their heads held high
and flirting with their eyes,
prancing and skipping as they go,
with the bracelets on their ankles jingling,
17the Lord will put sores
on the heads of the daughters of Zion.
The LORD will make their foreheads bare."
18On that day the Lord will take away their fine things:
their ankle bracelets, headbands, and moon-shaped necklaces,
19their earrings, bracelets, and veils, 20their headdresses, ankle chains, and sashes,
their perfume bottles and charms,
21their signet rings and nose rings, 22their party robes, capes, cloaks, and purses, 23and their mirrors, linen clothes,
fancy head coverings, and shawls.
24Instead of perfume, there will be a bad smell.
Instead of a belt, there will be a rope.
Instead of fancy hair, there will be baldness.
Instead of fine clothes, there will be sackcloth.
Instead of beauty, there will be shame.
25Your men will be killed by the sword.
Your warriors will die in battle.
26The gates of Zion will cry and mourn.
She will have nothing left.
She will sit on the ground.
