1Look, the LORD is wiping out the earth.
He leaves it in ruins.
He will twist its surface.
He will scatter the people who live on it.
2It will be the same for people and priest,
servant and master,
maid and the woman she serves,
buyer and seller,
lender and borrower,
the one owed and the one in debt.
3The earth will be completely wiped out.
It will be totally robbed.
For the LORD has spoken this word.
4The earth mourns and dries up.
The world grows weak and fades.
The proud people of the earth waste away.
5The earth is made unclean by its people.
They have broken the laws.
They have gone against the decrees.
They have broken the covenant that lasts forever.
6So a curse has eaten up the earth.
Its people must pay for their guilt.
The people of the earth have been burned up.
Only a few are left alive.
7The new wine dries up.
The vine dries up and dies.
All who used to party now groan.
8The happy tambourines have stopped.
The noise of the partying has ended.
The happy harp is silent.
9They do not sing and drink wine anymore.
Beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.
10The city of chaos is broken down.
Every house is shut so no one can go in.
11In the streets they cry out for wine.
All joy turns to gloom.
Gladness has been sent away from the land.
12The city is left in ruins.
Its gate is smashed to pieces.
13This is how it will be on the earth and among the nations.
It will be like an olive tree after the harvest is beaten off.
It will be like the few grapes left after the grape harvest.
14They lift up their voices.
They shout for joy.
From the west they tell of the LORD's greatness.
15So give glory to the LORD in the east.
Praise the name of the LORD, the God of Israel,
in the islands of the sea.
16From the ends of the earth we hear singing:
"Glory to the Righteous One."
But I said, "I am wasting away! I am wasting away!
How terrible it is for me!"
Traitors betray.
Traitors keep on betraying.
17Terror and pit and trap are waiting for you,
you people who live on the earth.
18Whoever runs from the sound of terror will fall into the pit.
Whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in the trap.
For the windows of heaven are open.
The foundations of the earth shake.
19The earth is totally broken apart.
The earth is split open.
The earth is shaken hard.
20The earth staggers like a drunk man.
It sways like a shack.
Its rebellion lies heavy on it.
It falls and will never get up again.
21On that day the LORD will punish
the powers in heaven above
and the kings on the earth below.a
22They will be gathered together
like prisoners in a pit.
They will be locked in a prison.
After many days they will be punished.
23The moon will be embarrassed.
The sun will be ashamed.
For the LORD of Hosts will rule as king
on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem.
He will rule with great glory in front of his elders.
