¹People began to grow in number on the earth. Daughters were born to them. ²Then the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful. They married any of them they chose. ³So the LORD said, "My Spirit will not struggle with man forever, because he is mortal. His days will be 120 years." ⁴The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also later on. That was when the sons of God slept with the daughters of men, and they had children by them. Their children became the mighty men of long ago, men who were famous.a ⁵The LORD saw that people on the earth had become very wicked. Every plan of their hearts was only evil all the time. ⁶The LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth. His heart was filled with grief. ⁷So the LORD said, "I will wipe man, whom I created, off the face of the earth. I will wipe out every person and animal and crawling creature and bird. I will do this because I am grieved that I made them." ⁸But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. ⁹This is the story of Noah. Noah was a righteous man. No one could find fault with him among the people of his time. Noah walked with God. ¹⁰Noah had three sons. Their names were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. ¹¹The earth was rotten with sin in God's sight. It was full of violence. ¹²God looked at the earth and saw how rotten it was. It was rotten because all the living creatures on the earth had ruined their ways. ¹³So God said to Noah, "I have decided to put an end to all living creatures. The earth is full of violence because of them. Look, I am going to destroy them along with the earth. ¹⁴Make an ark out of gopher wood. Make rooms in it. Cover it with tar inside and out.b ¹⁵This is how you must build it. The ark must be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.c ¹⁶Make a roof for the ark. Finish the walls 18 inches below the top. Put a door in the side of the ark. Build a lower deck, a middle deck, and an upper deck.d ¹⁷Look! I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth. They will destroy every creature under the sky that has the breath of life. Everything on the earth will perish. ¹⁸But I will make my covenant with you. You will go into the ark with your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives. ¹⁹You must bring into the ark two of every living creature, a male and a female. This will keep them alive with you. ²⁰Two of every kind of bird, every kind of animal, and every kind of crawling creature will come to you. That way they will be kept alive. ²¹You must also take every kind of food that is eaten. Store it up as food for you and for the animals." ²²Noah did everything just as God commanded him.
