1Then the LORD said to Noah, "Go into the ark, you and your whole family. I am doing this because I have seen that you are righteous among the people of this time. 2Take with you seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate. Take one pair of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate.a 3Also take seven pairs of every kind of bird, male and female. This will keep their kinds alive all over the earth. 4For seven days from now I will send rain on the earth. It will rain for forty days and forty nights. I will wipe every living thing I have made off the face of the earth." 5Noah did everything the LORD commanded him. 6Noah was 600 years old when the floodwaters came on the earth. 7Noah and his wife went into the ark. His sons and their wives went in too. They went in to escape the waters of the flood. 8Clean and unclean animals, birds, and everything that crawls on the ground 9came to Noah and went into the ark. They came two by two, male and female, just as God had commanded Noah. 10After seven days the floodwaters came on the earth. 11It was the 600th year of Noah's life, on the 17th day of the second month. On that day all the springs of the great deep burst open. And the floodgates of the sky were opened. 12Rain fell on the earth for forty days and forty nights. 13On that very day Noah went into the ark. His sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth went with him. His wife and his three sons' wives went in too. 14With them went every kind of wild animal, farm animal, crawling creature, bird, and creature with wings. 15Two of every creature that had the breath of life came to Noah and went into the ark. 16A male and a female of every living thing went in, just as God had commanded Noah. Then the LORD shut him in. 17For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth. The waters rose and lifted the ark high above the earth. 18The waters kept rising higher and higher on the earth. And the ark floated on top of the waters. 19At last the waters rose so high over the earth that they covered all the high mountains under the whole sky. 20The waters rose and covered the mountaintops. They were about 22 feet deep over them.b 21Every living thing that moved on the earth perished. Birds, farm animals, wild animals, and all the creatures that swarm on the earth perished. And every human being perished. 22Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nose died. 23Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out. People, farm animals, crawling creatures, and birds were all wiped off the earth. Only Noah and those with him in the ark were left. 24The waters covered the earth for 150 days.
