1It was the twelfth year, on the first day of the twelfth month. The LORD gave me this message. He said, 2"Son of man, sing a sad song for Pharaoh king of Egypt. Say to him:
'You are like a lion among the nations.
You are like a monster in the seas.
You thrash around in your rivers.
You stir up the waters with your feet.
You make the streams muddy.'
3This is what the Lord GOD says:
'I will spread my net over you
with a crowd of many peoples.
They will pull you up in my net.
4I will leave you on the land.
I will throw you into the open field.
I will make all the birds of the sky land on you.
I will let all the wild animals of the earth
eat all they want of you.
5I will spread your flesh on the mountains.
I will fill the valleys with what is left of you.
6I will soak the land with your flowing blood,
all the way to the mountains.
The ravines will be filled with it.
7When I blow you out like a flame,
I will cover the skies
and make their stars dark.
I will cover the sun with a cloud.
The moon will not give its light.
8I will make all the shining lights in the sky
go dark over you.
I will bring darkness on your land,'
declares the Lord GOD.
9'I will trouble the hearts of many peoples
when I bring about your ruin among the nations,
in countries you have never known.
10I will make many peoples shocked at you.
Their kings will shake with horror because of you
when I swing my sword in front of them.
On the day you fall,
each of them will tremble every moment
for his own life.'
11For this is what the Lord GOD says:
'The sword of the king of Babylon
will come against you!
12I will make your crowds fall
by the swords of mighty men.
They are the most cruel of all the nations.
They will destroy the pride of Egypt.
All her crowds will be wiped out.
13I will kill all her cattle
beside her many waters.
No human foot will make them muddy again.
No cattle hooves will stir them up.
14Then I will let her waters settle and become clear.
I will make her rivers flow smooth like oil,'
declares the Lord GOD.
15'I will make the land of Egypt empty.
I will strip it of everything that filled it.
I will strike down all who live there.
Then they will know that I am the LORD.'
16This is the sad song they will sing for her. The women of the nations will sing it. They will sing it over Egypt and all her crowds, declares the Lord GOD." 17It was the twelfth year, on the fifteenth day of the month. The LORD gave me this message. He said, 18"Son of man, wail for the crowds of Egypt. Send her down to the deep places of the earth, along with the daughters of the mighty nations. Send them down with those who go down to the Pit. 19Who are you more beautiful than? Go down and be laid among the uncircumcised! 20They will fall among those killed by the sword. The sword is ready! Let them drag her away, along with all her crowds. 21From the middle of the grave, mighty leaders will speak about Egypt and those who helped her. They will say, 'They have come down. They lie with the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword.'a 22Assyria is there with her whole army. Their graves are all around her. All of them were killed. They fell by the sword. 23Her graves are in the deepest parts of the Pit. Her army lies all around her grave. All of them were killed. They fell by the sword. Once they made people afraid in the land of the living. 24Elam is there, with all her crowds around her grave. All of them were killed. They fell by the sword. They went down uncircumcised to the world below. Once they made people afraid in the land of the living. Now they carry their shame with those who go down to the Pit. 25A bed has been made for Elam among those who were killed. All her crowds are with her. Their graves are all around her. All of them are uncircumcised, killed by the sword. Once they made people afraid in the land of the living. Now they carry their shame with those who go down to the Pit. They are laid among the dead. 26Meshech and Tubal are there with all their crowds. Their graves are all around them. All of them are uncircumcised, killed by the sword. This is because they made people afraid in the land of the living. 27They do not lie down with the fallen warriors of long ago. Those warriors went down to the grave with their weapons of war. Their swords were placed under their heads. Their shields lay on their bones. Yet those mighty men also once made people afraid in the land of the living.b 28You too, Pharaoh, will be crushed. You will lie down among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword. 29Edom is there, with all her kings and princes. They were mighty, but they are laid among those killed by the sword. They lie down with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the Pit. 30All the leaders of the north are there, and all the people of Sidon. They went down in shame with the dead, even though their power made people afraid. They lie uncircumcised with those killed by the sword. They carry their shame with those who go down to the Pit. 31Pharaoh will see them. He will be comforted about all his crowds who died. Pharaoh and all his army will be killed by the sword, declares the Lord GOD. 32For I will spread terror of me in the land of the living. Pharaoh and all his crowds will be laid to rest among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword, declares the Lord GOD."
