1It was the eleventh year, on the first day of the third month. The LORD gave me this message. He said, 2"Son of man, say this to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to all his people:
'Who can be compared to you in greatness?
3Look at Assyria.
It was like a cedar tree in Lebanon.
It had beautiful branches that shaded the forest.
It stood very tall.
Its top was up among the clouds.
4The waters made it grow.
The deep springs made it tall.
Their streams flowed all around its roots.
They sent their channels
to all the trees of the field.
5So it grew taller
than all the trees of the field.
It had more and more branches.
Its limbs grew long as it spread them out,
because it had plenty of water.
6All the birds of the sky
built nests in its branches.
All the wild animals had their young
under its limbs.
All the great nations
lived in its shade.
7It was beautiful and great,
with its long limbs.
For its roots went down
to plenty of water.
8The cedars in the garden of God
could not match it.
The cypress trees could not compare with its branches.
The plane trees could not match its limbs.
No tree in the garden of God
was as beautiful as it was.
9I made it beautiful
with its many branches.
All the trees of Eden in the garden of God
were jealous of it.'
10So this is what the Lord GOD says: 'It grew very tall. It put its top up among the clouds. And it became proud because it was so tall. 11So I handed it over to the ruler of the nations. He would deal with it as its wickedness deserved. I have thrown it out. 12Foreigners, the most cruel of the nations, cut it down and left it. Its branches fell on the mountains and in every valley. Its limbs lay broken in all the ravines of the earth. All the peoples of the earth left its shade and walked away from it. 13All the birds of the sky made nests on its fallen trunk. All the wild animals lived among its limbs. 14This happened so that no other trees by the waters would grow so tall. No other trees would put their tops up among the clouds. No other trees with plenty of water would grow that high. For all of them are headed for death. They will go to the deep places of the earth. They will be among the humans who go down to the Pit.' 15This is what the Lord GOD says: 'On the day it was brought down to the grave, I caused mourning. I covered the deep waters because of it. I held back its rivers. Its many waters were stopped. I made Lebanon mourn for it. All the trees of the field fainted because of it.a 16I made the nations shake at the sound of its fall. I threw it down to the grave with those who go down to the Pit. Then all the trees of Eden were comforted in the world below. They were the finest and best trees of Lebanon, all the trees that had plenty of water.b 17They also went down with it to the grave. They joined those killed by the sword. They had been its helpers. They had lived in its shade among the nations.c 18Which of the trees of Eden was like you in glory and greatness? But you also will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the deep places of the earth. You will lie among the uncircumcised. You will be with those killed by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his people, declares the Lord GOD.'"
