1Listen to this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria!
You women crush the poor.
You stomp on the needy.
You say to your husbands,
"Bring us more to drink!" 2The Lord GOD has made a promise by his own holiness:
"Look! The days are coming
when you will be dragged away with hooks.
The last of you will be taken with fishhooks. 3You will go out through the holes in the walls.
Each of you will go straight out.
You will be thrown out toward Harmon,"
declares the LORD. 4"Go to Bethel and sin!
Go to Gilgal and sin even more!
Bring your sacrifices every morning.
Bring your tithes, a tenth of what you have, every three days. 5Offer bread made with yeast as a thank offering.
Brag loudly about the gifts you give freely.
That is what you love to do, people of Israel,"
declares the Lord GOD. 6"I gave you empty stomachs in all your cities.
There was no bread in all your towns.
Yet you did not come back to me,"
declares the LORD.a 7"I also held back the rain from you
when the harvest was still three months away.
I sent rain on one city
but held it back from another.
One field got rain.
Another field got none and dried up. 8People wandered weakly from city to city to find water to drink.
But they did not get enough.
Yet you did not come back to me,"
declares the LORD. 9"I struck your gardens and vineyards with plant diseases and mold.
Locusts ate up your fig trees and olive trees.
Yet you did not come back to me,"
declares the LORD. 10"I sent plagues on you like the ones in Egypt.
I killed your young men with the sword.
I killed your captured horses too.
I filled your noses with the stink of your camps.
Yet you did not come back to me,"
declares the LORD. 11"I destroyed some of you
as I destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.
You were like a burning stick pulled out of a fire.
Yet you did not come back to me,"
declares the LORD. 12"So that is what I will do to you, Israel.
And since I will do this to you,
get ready to meet your God, Israel! 13Look! He is the one who shapes the mountains.
He makes the wind.
He shows people his thoughts.
He turns the dawn into darkness.
He walks on the high places of the earth.
The LORD, the God of Hosts, is his name."
