1From Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ. To those who have received a faith as precious as ours. You received it through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ. 2May you have more and more grace and peace as you come to know God and Jesus our Lord. 3God's power has given us everything we need for life and for godliness. We have it through knowing the one who called us. He called us by his own glory and goodness. 4Through these, he has given us his great and precious promises. Through them you can share in God's nature. You have now escaped the rot in the world caused by evil desires. 5That is why you should try as hard as you can to add goodness to your faith. And add knowledge to goodness. 6Add self-control to knowledge. Add the strength to keep going to self-control. And add godliness to the strength to keep going. 7Add kindness toward fellow believers to godliness. And add love to that kindness. 8You may have these qualities and keep growing in them. If so, they will keep you from being useless and fruitless in knowing our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But anyone who doesn't have them can't see far. He is so nearsighted he is blind. He has forgotten that his past sins were washed away. 10So, brothers and sisters, work hard to make sure God has called and chosen you. If you do these things, you will never fall. 11And you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 12So I will always remind you of these things. I know you already know them. And I know you stand firm in the truth you now have. 13I think it is right to keep reminding you for as long as I live in the tent of this body. 14I know that I will soon put this tent aside. Our Lord Jesus Christ has made this clear to me. 15And I will do my best to make sure you can always remember these things after I am gone. 16We told you about the power of our Lord Jesus Christ and about his coming. We were not following clever made-up stories. We saw his greatness with our own eyes. 17He received honor and glory from God the Father. A voice came to him from God's great glory. It said, "This is my Son, whom I love. I am well pleased with him." 18We heard this voice ourselves. It came from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain. 19We also have the message of the prophets, which has been proven true. You will do well to pay attention to it. It is like a lamp shining in a dark place. Pay attention until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20Above all, you must understand this. No prophecy in Scripture comes from someone's own explanation.a 21No prophecy ever came because a person wanted it to. Instead, the Holy Spirit carried men along as they spoke from God.
