1Dear friends, we have these promises. So let us make ourselves clean from everything that makes body or spirit dirty. Let us become fully holy because we fear God. 2Make room for us in your hearts. We have not wronged anyone. We have not led anyone into evil. We have not taken advantage of anyone. 3I don't say this to blame you. I have told you before that you are so much in our hearts. We would live or die with you. 4I trust you very much. I am very proud of you. I am filled with comfort. In all our troubles, my joy overflows. 5When we came to Macedonia, our bodies had no rest. We were troubled on every side. There were fights all around us and fears inside us. 6But God comforts those who are sad. He comforted us when Titus came. 7It was not only his coming that comforted us. It was also the comfort you had given him. He told us how much you long to see me. He told us how sorry you are and how much you care about me. So I was even happier. 8My letter may have made you sad, but I am not sorry I sent it. I was sorry at first. I see that my letter made you sad, but only for a short time. 9Now I am happy. I am not happy because you were made sad. I am happy because your sadness made you turn back to God. You felt the sadness God wanted you to feel. So we did not harm you in any way. 10Sadness that comes from God makes people turn back to God. That leads to being saved, and it leaves no regret. But the world's kind of sadness brings death. 11Look at what this sadness from God has done in you! It made you serious, and eager to clear your names. It made you angry and afraid. It made you long for things to be right. It made you care deeply. It made you ready to see wrong punished. In every way you have shown that you are not guilty in this matter. 12So I did write to you. But it was not because of the one who did wrong. It was not because of the one who was hurt. I wrote so that you could see, before God, how much you care about us. 13This is why we are comforted. And besides our own comfort, we were even happier to see how glad Titus was. All of you have refreshed his spirit. 14I had bragged to him about you, and you did not make me feel ashamed. Everything we told you was true. In the same way, our bragging to Titus has proved true too. 15And his love for you grows even more when he remembers how all of you obeyed. You welcomed him with fear and trembling. 16I am glad that I can trust you completely.
