1We work together with God. So we beg you not to receive God's grace and then let it go to waste. 2God says, "At the time I chose to show kindness, I heard you. On the day of saving, I helped you." Look, now is the time God shows kindness. Now is the day he saves! 3We don't put anything in anyone's way that would make them trip. We don't want anyone to find fault with our work. 4Instead, we show in every way that we are God's servants. We hold on through much suffering. We hold on through troubles, hard times, and disasters. 5We have been beaten and put in prison. We have faced angry crowds. We have worked hard. We have gone without sleep and without food. 6We show it by being pure, by knowledge, by being patient, and by kindness. We show it by the Holy Spirit and by true love. 7We show it by speaking the truth and by the power of God. We hold the weapons of what is right in our right hand and in our left. 8We serve when we are honored and when we are shamed. We serve when people say bad things about us and when they praise us. People think we are liars, yet we tell the truth. 9We seem unknown, yet we are well known. We seem to be dying, and yet we live on. We are punished, yet we are not killed. 10We are sad, yet we are always full of joy. We are poor, yet we make many people rich. We have nothing, and yet we own everything. 11We have spoken openly to you, people of Corinth. Our hearts are wide open to you. 12We are not holding back our love from you. You are the ones holding back your love. 13I'm speaking to you as my children. Do the same for us in return. Open your hearts wide too. 14Do not be yoked together unequally with those who don't believe. What does what is right have to do with what is evil? Can light and darkness share life together?a 15How can Christ and Belial agree? What does a believer have in common with someone who doesn't believe?b 16How can the temple of God agree with idols? We are the temple of the living God. God has said, "I will live with them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people." 17"So come out from among them and be set apart, says the Lord. Touch nothing unclean, and I will welcome you." 18And, "I will be a Father to you. You will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."
