1Solomon son of David made himself strong and secure over his kingdom. The LORD his God was with him and made him very great. 2Then Solomon spoke to all Israel. He spoke to the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, to the judges, and to every leader in all Israel, the heads of the families. 3Solomon and the whole assembly went to the high place at Gibeon, because God's Tent of Meeting was there. Moses the LORD's servant had made it in the wilderness. 4David had already brought the ark of God up from Kiriath-jearim. He brought it to the place he had made ready for it, because he had set up a tent for it in Jerusalem. 5But the bronze altar was in Gibeon in front of the LORD's tabernacle. Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made it. So Solomon and the assembly went there to seek the LORD. 6There Solomon offered sacrifices before the LORD on the bronze altar at the Tent of Meeting. He offered a thousand burnt offerings on it. 7That night God appeared to Solomon. He said, "Ask for whatever you want, and I will give it to you!" 8Solomon answered God, "You showed great faithful love to my father David. And you have made me king in his place. 9Now, O LORD God, let your promise to my father David come true. You have made me king over a people as many as the dust of the earth. 10Now give me wisdom and knowledge so that I can lead this people. Who is able to rule this great people of yours?" 11God said to Solomon, "This is what you wanted in your heart. You did not ask for riches, wealth, or honor for yourself. You did not ask for your enemies to die. You did not even ask for a long life. Instead, you asked for wisdom and knowledge to rule my people, over whom I made you king. 12So wisdom and knowledge are given to you. I will also give you riches, wealth, and honor. No king before you or after you has had anything like it." 13Then Solomon left the high place at Gibeon, in front of the Tent of Meeting, and went to Jerusalem. And he ruled over Israel. 14Solomon gathered 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horses. He kept them in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem. 15The king made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stones. He made cedar as plentiful as the sycamore trees in the foothills. 16Solomon's horses were brought in from Egypt and Kue. The king's traders bought them from Kue. 17A chariot from Egypt cost six hundred shekels of silver. A horse cost a hundred and fifty. The traders also sold them to all the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Aram.a
