1Then King David said to the whole assembly, "God has chosen my son Solomon. But he is young and has little experience. The task is great, because this palace is not for people. It is for the LORD God. 2I have worked as hard as I can to supply things for the house of my God. I have given gold for the gold items, silver for the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron, and wood for the wood. I have also given onyx stones for settings, turquoise, stones of many colors, and all kinds of precious stones. I have given blocks of marble too. There is plenty of it all. 3Also, I love the house of my God. So now I am giving my own treasures of gold and silver for it. This is more than all I have already supplied for this holy temple. 4I am giving three thousand talents of gold, gold from Ophir. I am giving seven thousand talents of refined silver. It will cover the walls of the buildings.a 5It will be for the gold work and the silver work, and for all the work the craftsmen will do. Now, who is willing to give himself to the LORD today?" 6Then the leaders gave willingly. These were the family leaders and the officers of the tribes of Israel. They were the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and the officials over the king's work. 7For the work on God's house, they gave 5,000 talents and 10,000 darics of gold. They gave 10,000 talents of silver, 18,000 talents of bronze, and 100,000 talents of iron.b 8Anyone who had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the LORD's house. Jehiel the Gershonite took care of them. 9The people were filled with joy because their leaders had given so willingly. They had given to the LORD freely and with all their hearts. King David was also filled with great joy. 10Then David praised the LORD in front of the whole assembly. He said, "May you be praised, O LORD, God of our father Israel, forever and ever. 11Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power. Yours is the glory, the splendor, and the majesty. Everything in heaven and on earth belongs to you. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom. You are lifted high as head over all. 12Riches and honor both come from you. You rule over all. Power and strength are in your hands. You can lift up anyone and give strength to all. 13So now, our God, we give you thanks. We praise your glorious name. 14But who am I, and who are my people, that we could give so much as this? For everything comes from you. We have only given you what came from your own hand. 15We are foreigners and strangers before you, just as all our ancestors were. Our days on earth are like a shadow, with no hope. 16O LORD our God, all this wealth we have gathered to build you a house for your holy Name comes from your hand. All of it belongs to you. 17My God, I know that you test the heart. You are pleased with what is right. I have given all these things willingly, with an honest heart. And now I have seen your people here giving to you with joy and willing hearts. 18O LORD, God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, keep this desire in the hearts of your people forever. Keep their hearts turned toward you. 19Give my son Solomon a heart that is fully yours. Help him keep and obey all your commands, laws, and rules. Help him build the palace I have gathered supplies for." 20Then David said to the whole assembly, "Praise the LORD your God." So the whole assembly praised the LORD, the God of their fathers. They bowed down and gave honor to the LORD and to the king. 21The next day they offered sacrifices to the LORD and gave burnt offerings to him. They offered a thousand bulls, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings. They also offered many other sacrifices for all Israel. 22That day they ate and drank with great joy in the LORD's presence. Then they made David's son Solomon king a second time. They anointed him before the LORD to be the ruler, and they anointed Zadok to be the priest. 23So Solomon sat on the LORD's throne as king in place of his father David. He did well, and all Israel obeyed him. 24All the officials and mighty men promised to be loyal to King Solomon. All of King David's sons did too. 25The LORD made Solomon very great in the eyes of all Israel. He gave him royal glory that no king in Israel before him had ever had. 26David son of Jesse was king over all Israel. 27David ruled over Israel for forty years. He ruled seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. 28He died at a good old age, after a long life full of riches and honor. His son Solomon became king in his place. 29The acts of King David, from first to last, are written down. They are in the Chronicles of Samuel the Seer, the Chronicles of Nathan the Prophet, and the Chronicles of Gad the Seer. 30They tell all about his reign and his power. They tell what happened to him and to Israel and to all the kingdoms of the lands.
