1These were the groups of the descendants of Aaron. The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 2But Nadab and Abihu died before their father did. They had no sons. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests. 3David divided the priests into groups for their duties. Zadok helped him. He was from Eleazar's family. Ahimelech helped too. He was from Ithamar's family. 4There were more leaders among Eleazar's descendants than among Ithamar's. So they were divided that way. There were 16 family heads from Eleazar's descendants. There were 8 from Ithamar's descendants. 5So they divided them by casting lots, because there were officers of the holy place and officers of God among both Eleazar's and Ithamar's descendants. 6The scribe Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, wrote down their names. He did it in front of the king and the officers. These were Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the family heads of the priests and Levites. One family was chosen from Eleazar, and then one from Ithamar. 7The first lot fell to Jehoiarib. The second fell to Jedaiah. 8The third fell to Harim. The fourth fell to Seorim. 9The fifth fell to Malchijah. The sixth fell to Mijamin. 10The seventh fell to Hakkoz. The eighth fell to Abijah. 11The ninth fell to Jeshua. The tenth fell to Shecaniah. 12The eleventh fell to Eliashib. The twelfth fell to Jakim. 13The thirteenth fell to Huppah. The fourteenth fell to Jeshebeab. 14The fifteenth fell to Bilgah. The sixteenth fell to Immer. 15The seventeenth fell to Hezir. The eighteenth fell to Happizzez. 16The nineteenth fell to Pethahiah. The twentieth fell to Jehezkel. 17The twenty-first fell to Jachin. The twenty-second fell to Gamul. 18The twenty-third fell to Delaiah. The twenty-fourth fell to Maaziah. 19This was the order in which they served when they came into the house of the LORD. They followed the rules their ancestor Aaron had given them. The LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded Aaron to give these rules. 20These were the rest of the descendants of Levi. From the sons of Amram came Shubael. From the sons of Shubael came Jehdeiah. 21From the sons of Rehabiah, Isshiah was the first. 22From the Izharites came Shelomoth. From the sons of Shelomoth came Jahath. 23From the sons of Hebron, Jeriah was the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth. 24From the sons of Uzziel came Micah. From the sons of Micah came Shamir. 25Micah's brother was Isshiah. From the sons of Isshiah came Zechariah. 26The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. The son of Jaaziah was Beno. 27The descendants of Merari through Jaaziah were Beno, Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri. 28From Mahli came Eleazar, who had no sons. 29From Kish came Jerahmeel, the son of Kish. 30And the sons of Mushi were Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the Levites, listed by their families. 31They also cast lots, just as their relatives the descendants of Aaron did. They did it in front of King David, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the family heads of the priests and Levites. The family heads and their younger brothers were treated the same.
