1Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David. He also sent cedar logs, stonemasons, and carpenters to build a palace for him. 2Then David knew that the LORD had made him king over Israel and set him firmly in place. He knew the LORD had made his kingdom very great for the sake of his people Israel. 3In Jerusalem David married more wives. He became the father of more sons and daughters. 4These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 5Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, 6Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 7Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet. 8The Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel. So they all went out to look for him. But David heard about it and went out to face them. 9The Philistines had come and raided the Valley of Rephaim. 10So David asked God, "Should I go up and attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?" The LORD answered, "Go. I will hand them over to you." 11So David and his men went up to Baal-perazim. There he defeated the Philistines. He said, "God has burst out against my enemies by my hand, like a flood bursting through." So that place was named Baal-perazim.a 12The Philistines left their gods behind there. David gave orders to burn them in the fire. 13Once again the Philistines raided the valley. 14So David asked God again. God answered him, "Don't go straight up after them. Circle around behind them. Attack them in front of the balsam trees. 15Listen for the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees. As soon as you hear it, go out to battle. Do this because it will mean that God has gone out ahead of you to strike the Philistine army." 16So David did what God commanded him. They struck down the Philistine army all the way from Gibeon to Gezer. 17And David became famous in every land. And the LORD made all the nations afraid of him.
