1Then David talked with all his leaders. These were the commanders of thousands and of hundreds. 2Then he said to the whole gathering of Israel, "If you think it is good, and if it is from the LORD our God, let's send word everywhere. Let's call the rest of our brothers in all the land of Israel. Let's also call the priests and Levites in their towns and pasturelands. Then they can join us. 3Then let's bring back the ark of our God, because we did not seek him in the days of Saul." 4All the people thought this plan was right. So the whole gathering agreed to do it. 5So David gathered all Israel, from the Shihor River in Egypt to Lebo-hamath. They came to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim. 6David and all Israel went up to Baalah in Judah, which is Kiriath-jearim. They went to bring up the ark of God from there. It is the ark of the LORD, who sits on his throne between the cherubim. The ark is called by his Name. 7They carried the ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab. Uzzah and Ahio were guiding the cart. 8David and all the Israelites were celebrating before God with all their strength. They sang songs and played harps, lyres, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets. 9They came to the threshing floor of Chidon. There Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark, because the oxen had stumbled. 10The LORD's anger burned against Uzzah. He struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So Uzzah died there before God. 11Then David became angry because the LORD had burst out against Uzzah. So he named that place Perez-uzzah. It is still called that today.a 12That day David was afraid of God. He asked, "How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?" 13So David did not take the ark with him to the City of David. Instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 14The ark of God stayed with Obed-edom's family in his house for three months. And the LORD blessed his family and everything he owned.
