¹Ask the LORD for rain in the springtime.
The LORD makes the storm clouds.
He will give everyone showers of rain.
He will give everyone plants in the field. ²For idols tell lies.
Fortune-tellers see visions that are not real.
They tell dreams that are false.
They give comfort that is empty.
So the people wander like sheep.
They suffer because they have no shepherd. ³"I am very angry with the shepherds.
I will punish the leaders.
For the LORD of Hosts takes care of his flock, the people of Judah.
He will make them like his proud war horse in battle. ⁴The cornerstone will come from Judah.
The tent peg will come from him.
The bow for battle will come from him.
Every ruler will come from him too. ⁵They will be like mighty warriors in battle.
They will stomp the enemy into the mud of the streets.
They will fight because the LORD is with them.
They will put the enemy horsemen to shame. ⁶I will make the people of Judah strong.
I will save the people of Joseph.
I will bring them back because I care about them deeply.
It will be as if I had never turned them away.
For I am the LORD their God, and I will answer them. ⁷The people of Ephraim will be like mighty warriors.
Their hearts will be happy as if from wine.
Their children will see it and be full of joy.
Their hearts will be glad in the LORD. ⁸I will whistle for them and gather them in.
For I have redeemed them.
There will be as many of them as there were before. ⁹Though I scatter them like seeds among the nations,
in faraway lands they will remember me.
They and their children will live, and they will come back. ¹⁰I will bring them back from Egypt.
I will gather them from Assyria.
I will bring them to Gilead and Lebanon.
There will not be enough room for them all. ¹¹They will pass through the sea of trouble.
The waves of the sea will be struck down.
All the deep places of the Nile will dry up.
The pride of Assyria will be brought down.
Egypt's power to rule will go away. ¹²I will make them strong in the LORD.
They will live by his name," says the LORD.
