1I have come into my garden,
my sister, my bride.
I have gathered my myrrh and my spice.
I have eaten my honeycomb and my honey.
I have drunk my wine and my milk.
Eat, friends, and drink!
Drink all you want, you who are loved.
2I was asleep, but my heart was awake.
Listen! My beloved is knocking.
"Open the door for me, my sister, my darling,
my dove, my perfect one.
My head is wet with dew.
My hair is damp from the night."
3I have taken off my robe.
Must I put it on again?
I have washed my feet.
Must I get them dirty again?
4My beloved put his hand on the latch.
My heart pounded for him.
5I got up to open the door for my beloved.
My hands dripped with myrrh.
My fingers dripped with flowing myrrh
on the handles of the lock.
6I opened the door for my beloved,
but he had turned and gone away.
My heart sank when he left.
I looked for him, but I did not find him.
I called him, but he did not answer.
7The watchmen found me
as they walked around the city.
They beat me and bruised me.
They took away my cloak,
those guards of the walls.
8Daughters of Jerusalem, promise me this.
If you find my beloved,
tell him I am sick with love.
9Most beautiful of women,
why is your beloved better than others?
Why is he better than any other man,
that you make us promise this?
10My beloved is shining and ruddy.
He stands out among ten thousand.
11His head is the purest gold.
His hair is wavy
and black as a raven.
12His eyes are like doves
by streams of water.
They are washed in milk
and set like jewels.
13His cheeks are like beds of spice,
like towers of perfume.
His lips are like lilies
dripping with flowing myrrh.
14His arms are rods of gold
set with beryl stones.
His body is smooth ivory
covered with sapphires.
15His legs are pillars of marble
set on bases of pure gold.
He looks like Lebanon.
He is as grand as its cedars.
16His mouth is very sweet.
Everything about him is lovely.
This is my beloved.
This is my friend,
daughters of Jerusalem.
