1So we have been made right with God through faith. Now we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2Through Jesus, by faith, we have come into this grace where we now stand. And we are full of joy because of our hope. We hope to share in God's glory. 3And that's not all. We are also full of joy when we suffer. We know that suffering helps us learn to keep going. 4Keeping going builds strong character. And strong character brings hope. 5And hope does not let us down, because God has poured his love into our hearts. He did this through the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. 6We were still helpless. But at just the right time, Christ died for ungodly people. 7It is very rare for anyone to die for a righteous person. For a good person, someone might be brave enough to die. 8But God shows his love for us in this way. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9We have now been made right with God by the blood of Christ. So we will be saved from God's anger through him. How much more sure that is! 10We were God's enemies. But we were made friends with God through the death of his Son. Now that we are his friends, we will be saved through his life. How much more sure that is! 11And that's not all. We also have joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have now been made friends with God. 12So sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin. In the same way, death spread to all people, because all sinned. 13Sin was in the world before the law was given. But sin is not counted when there is no law. 14Still, death ruled from the time of Adam to the time of Moses. It ruled even over those who did not sin the way Adam did when he broke God's command. Adam was a picture of the One who was coming. 15But God's gift is not like Adam's sin. Many people died because of the sin of one man. But God's grace is much greater. The gift that came by the grace of one man, Jesus Christ, has overflowed to many people! 16Again, God's gift is not like the result of one man's sin. One sin was judged, and it brought guilt. But the gift came after many sins, and it makes people right with God. 17Because of one man's sin, death ruled through that one man. But some people receive God's overflowing grace. They receive the gift of being right with God. How much more will they rule in life through the one man, Jesus Christ! 18So one sin brought a guilty verdict for all people. In the same way, one right act brought being made right with God, and life, for all people. 19One man disobeyed, and many people were made sinners. In the same way, one man obeyed, and many people will be made right with God. 20The law came so that sin would grow. But where sin grew, grace grew even more. 21This happened so that grace would rule, just as sin ruled in death. Grace rules by making people right with God. It brings eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
