1Brothers and sisters, I long with all my heart for the people of Israel to be saved. I pray to God for this. 2I can tell you that they are very eager to serve God. But their eagerness is not based on knowing the truth. 3They did not know how God makes people right with him. They tried to make their own way. So they did not accept God's way of making them right. 4Christ is the end of the law. So everyone who believes can be made right with God. 5Moses writes about being right with God by the law. He says, "The person who does these things will live by them." 6But being right with God by faith says this: "Don't say in your heart, 'Who will go up into heaven?'" (That means to bring Christ down.) 7"Or, 'Who will go down into the Abyss?'" (That means to bring Christ up from the dead.) 8But what does it say? "The word is near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart." That is the message of faith we are preaching. 9It says that if you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10With your heart you believe and are made right with God. With your mouth you say what you believe and are saved. 11As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12There is no difference between Jew and Greek. The same Lord is Lord of all. He gives richly to all who call on him. 13For, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." 14But how can people call on him if they have not believed in him? How can they believe in him if they have not heard about him? How can they hear unless someone preaches to them? 15And how can anyone preach unless he is sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" 16But not all of them accepted the good news. Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our message?" 17So faith comes from hearing the message. And the message is heard through the word about Christ. 18But I ask, didn't they hear? Of course they did! "Their voice has gone out into all the earth. Their words have gone to the ends of the world." 19Again I ask, didn't Israel understand? First, Moses says, "I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation. I will make you angry with a nation that has no understanding." 20And Isaiah boldly says, "I was found by those who were not looking for me. I showed myself to those who did not ask for me." 21But about Israel he says, "All day long I have held out my hands to a people who disobey and are stubborn."
